My laywer filed a paper to relink my case on 08/2006. In the meantime, I added my wife into my appliction. Once when my wife got her EAD and AP in 11/2006, I knew that the re-link is good and completed. Also, my laywer did several times for re-links, and some of them worked.
I frequently contact the officers in the senator or congressman's office. (about every two weeks). They did a great job on monitoring the status, and helped to request to move my case from distribution area to review area inside of USCIS.
