It dose not hurt to try, but quite honest, it is going to be difficult. Had the same situation before, when they refuse, they do not even give the time to go through all the documents, when they give the visa, they hardly look at the paperwork, too. So, it is totally up to your parent's luck. I do not think the passport is a problem and I think you are right on the 6 months or less. Do not forget the form I-134, Affidavit of Support, and it needs to be notarized also. Good luck!!
