EAD or renew 3 years H1B?

I asked my lawyer to renew my H1B. he told me that I can renew another 3 years, but I can not renew and have to use EAD after I file I485. What is the advantage to have a 3 years H1B comparing with EAD.
How long does it take to renew a H1B?
