How to get a U.S.A SSN?

My hu*****and is a Canadian citizenship (in Canada now) and got the interview from the US. However, the company said that we must provide the SSN to process the interview.

Questions:
1. Why does the company need it?
2. How could we get SSN number as a Canadian citizenship? or could we provide similar information to prove something?
