help: is the receipt number the application number?

Please help! I called the uscis 1800 number to find out my case status, the receipt number I used was the application number(top left corner) on my receipt. Is this correct? For some reason, the automated system could not find my case given the application number. Am I using the wrong number? but I could not find any other receipt number besides this application number.
