Based on immigration law, you are supposed to work for at least another six months for your current type of job (for you, research, as that is how you applied for NIW, right?) or current employer (for employment-based I-140), AFTER you filed I-485.
So have you filed your I-485 or not? Even if you have filed it, it would still be a judgment call on whether you should leave or not.
If you want to jump to a different job, you would have to consider "timing" of H-1B visa (there is quota for that), and job change.
Meanwhile, you can always work on something part-time. e.g., indpendent contractor, or some type of business. It gives you extra income and exposure to different experiences. Planting the seeds now, and you will surely get the harvest in the future. So how motivated are you? :).
