What if the consulate doesn't permit a delay? Then I am afraid your hu*****and will have to change his itinerary.

Usually it takes 4 weeks to get your passport back from the consulate. Maybe you can ask your hu*****and to FedEX the passport to you and you send them together to the consulate. If you do it quickly you may be able to FedEX the passport to him in China after you got it back.
