Transfer H-1B actually is to apply for a new H-1B. The difference between the first applying for H-1B and transfer H-1B is that applying for the first H-1B, you need to be within the H-1B number of cap, and the transfering H-1B, you do not need to be within the cap. So, it is very easy to transfer H-1B if you have a H-1B position. For your situation, because you work for researching job, there is not a cap problem. And you may or may not need to tell your boss to transfer your H-1B to a new boss. However, you may need your boss's reference letter. So, you should tell him before a certain days.
