xiaobaitu et al, please look at this critical I-485 vs marriage

Xiaobaitu and all the warm-hearted friends,
My friend encounter a serious question.
He ted his I-485 a while ago which will be approved very soon. Now he is going to marry a lady who are not a resident or citizen.
As you know once he gets the GC, his wife has to maintain her legal status independently for many years which means they are likely to separate for many years.

My question is that is there any hope to his wife's I-485 in order to take the advantage of status transfer? When (in which stage) is the turning-point?
