Question About New Chinese Passport and ID Card

I heard that after 1/1/07, a new passport will be needed, and I also know the ID card will change from 15 digits to 18 digits. What I have is the old ID card, and I don't have a new 18 digit ID number, but it seems to me that the ID number will be printed on the passport. In this case, how things will work out? Can anyone with experience tell something about it?
