What does "the empolyer keep status for several months" mean? for you or for him? If it is for you, he need to pay you and let you to look for a new job. Of course you can keep your H-1b until your employer will not pay you. Within the period, if you get job, you may transfer your H-1b or you can change into F visa. It is up to your situation in the coming days.
