Let them file an application on behalf of you with necessary attached files to US department of state, if it is approved,then you will be change to J1 student catergory together.If it is denied,you have to leave US 30 days later than the notice or the day when you finish you current contract.
In the before,J1 schlars applied F1 visa in Mexico easily. but better in one or two years after they came to US. your case I doubt vo will think you just try to stay at US.
But whatever,try every way you can.If all ways failed,so what?
