H1b holder can work either using H1 or using EAD. Therefore, H1 holder doesn't have to apply for/renew EAD. However, it's better to keep a valid EAD as backup since by using EAD, you may work for any employer while your H1 status allows you work for only the specific employer who sponsored your H1. You have to apply for a new H1 for working with a different employer;
You can renew your EAD after the old one expired. But before your new one gets approved, you can’t work with EAD since your old one is invalid;
The new EAD will be effective on the date when your EAD got approved, no matter your old one is valid or invalid;
There is another difference between H1 status and EAD: You can work for the new employer as long as you have received receipt of H1 application, which means you don't have to wait till your new H1 gets approved. But you have to have a valid EAD to work for an employer, and the EAD receipt is not good enough to allow you to work unless your old one is still valid.
Application for/possession of EAD doesn't invalidate your H1 status. Only use of EAD will change your status from H1 to Adjustment of Status (AOS).
The processing time for EAD application/renewal is variable from 10 days to 90 days. Therefore, 100 days ahead of your old EAD expiration date is recommended to EAD application/renewal.
EAD is valid for only 1 years. The cost for EAD application/renewal is $180. If you don't plan or not have to change your job before you get green card, and you have no problem with your H1, you don't need to keep a valid EAD.
