H1B help!

I got offer from the company. The company asked me to go to work soon. I am only h1B holder in school. How can i go to work from the company? I was told if i apply 20000 H1B cap for the people who got degree in USA, no need to wait unitl Oct 1st because once it is approved, it will be effectivie right away. This is right? Thanks
