J-1 extention?

I am a fresh man to the U.S. My J-1 visa only valid for 4 months. I wanna to extend my J-1 visa for one more year. But, I have no idea which one is better: seek a lawyer or ask help directly for my employer? BTW, I don't work for School, I work for a middle sized company.
Any advices would be highly appreciated.
