It seems that the trouble is: "he" is worrying to lose his job if you will be hired.

The REAL TROUBLE (for the manager) might be: will you be working at the company for long enough before you take a job that will require a PhD and provide better payment or do they have to pay you MORE than someone else for the same job. You really need to think about theses questions when you talk to the manager. In any case you need give the manager an impression that "YOU REALLY LIKE THE COMPANY".
