Your status after 8/29 will be AOS, perfectly legal.
You still have time to file I-539 to change status to H4 (by 8/29 or slightly later but not too late).
If you want to work using EAD, your H4 will be abandoned immediately and become AOS as well. The only problem of AOS is, if your I-485 is denied, you need to leave immediately (and can come back again later using other non-immigrant Visa).
My wife had the same issue. Her H1 expired on 7/15, but had I-485 pending from my GC application. She planned to use EAD to work so I decided not to bother by filing I-539 to change to H4. The I-485 was later approved on 8/9.
