AOS status and laid off, need apply H-4 or not?

If a person is in AOS status (dependent, not primary applicant) nad he/she is laid off, does he or she need apply other visa to keep the legal status? It should be fine, I think, as long as not gaining salary; or apply EAD. But H4 shouldn't be required. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
