Did you mum apply for only 5 months in the application form, or said that at the interview? Anyway it is likely that her I94 would be given for 5 months (if the officer, who issues I94, read the visa carefully) when she enters USA. If she applies for extension for staying in the USA for more than 5 months it would affect her application next time.
