Do you have H-1 visa to enter the US? Or you just have the USCIS approval for H1 status? Thanks. I want to know whether I can come back to the US without visa. (F2 visa changed to F-1 status in 2003, no F-1 visa)

Thanks, I only have I797 approval notice.
F1 should be the easiest case, as far as I heard.
You do have to prepare all the I797 and I20 forms all the way back after you came US.
