If you are renewing by mail, I am sure that you need to send 正麵照片 with your other materials. Renewing EAD is just the same as applying for new. When I applied for my EAD, I send everything together to INS and got my EAD within 1 week.

I am not sure why others are saying that you need to wait until you get notification from INS to take your FP and photo. My guess is that, that might happen if you renew that online. I heard that you might need to take your FP again if you do that online. But if you renew by mail, you don't need to worry about that. FP doesn't need to be done.
