Wojian is correct... If your H1-B is approved, you can start working for your new employer instantly regardless where you are in your PHD program. I don't see why you can't quit your graduate assistantship job after H1-b is granted(unless you have legal obligation to fulfill in that job). As a precaution, I would recommend you notify your school AFTER your HI-B is approved. This way you can always have your F1 to fall back on in case your H1B is not approved ~! With regards to precedures, if you already have a job lined up, then start the H1-B petition right away with help from a good lawyer. Of course, if your new employer is familiar with the petition process, you don't have use a lawyer...If you don't have a job yet, then go get yourself one ~! Do not worry too much... Good luck
