I-485 filing, please help!

My I-140 via NIW approved recently and I need to file I-485, I wondered can I filed it myself rather than have a lawyer to do it? Also, how long does it take for me to get travel document and work authoristion card? I heard that the EAD card will only valid for a year and I need to renew it if I can't receive my greencard within a year.
