HELP! a question about H1B extension

My current H1B (at University) will expire this June 30 and the extension petition was just mailed to VSC yesterday. In order to get a legal status after June 30, must I get a receipt from the immigration office before that date? If yes, how long will it take to get the receipt from the VSC office?
