If you are a visiting scholar to work here, you can extend you visa to three years, That means you can stay here three year totally. If you are a exchanging student, you an extend the visa as long as you want.

Before you transfer your J-1 visa to any other type of visa, you have to apply waiver. It is not too difficulty, it is just about time. But your workplace in China must be cooperative.

If you are post-doc, you can apply the specail benifit to the US, then you do not need the cooperation from your workplace in China. It is a waiver too, just different type of waiver.
