parent immigration to canada, please help

How long does a canadian citizen or permenant resident take to apply to immigrate the parents to canada. Is it easy for the parents to get visa to visit the citizen or permenat resident before they get the green card to canada. Anyone has the experience? Please help! Thanks in advance.
