I went to Canada with Immigration Visa to Canada (Landing). And I came back using my current valid H1 I-94 (white I-94 you got at the airport). And the officer hnew that I went to Canada for Landing since he looked at my visa to Canada. How can you get in Canda without Canada Visa?
I think AVR fits for H1 holders too. If you are in H1 and not pending state, you are safe to come back using I-94. My fried is F1->H1 all here (no H1 visa stamp on the passport). And they came back to U.S. using I-94 (attached on the 797 approval) after being checked in computer.
