I do believe that she need to travel outside US to get her H4 back if she use EAD therefore her status changes to AOS. In case your I-140 get rejected, she will lose her AOS. A lot of previous post addressed that questions. You can search XiaoBaitu's and others' answer to that.
However, I am not a professional in immigration therefore I can't guarantee you my understanding is correct. I think that Xiaobaitu and mytwocents will be better person to ask regarding this question.
