Xiaobaitu and others: For help

My visa is H1B (working in a university), and I-485 pending. I am planning to visit a friend in Canada with my family for a week this summer. My questions are:

(1) We need a visa for Canada, right? (My son holds an Australian passport. So I believe he does not need any visa for such a short visit).

(2) My understanding is that a visa for re-entering the US is not required as long as our I-94 is valid. But I (only myself) can apply for H1B visa at the US Consulate Toronto if I need the 2nd entry for travelling overseas next time. Does it work?

I am very grateful if you can give me any suggestions.
