Since you have H-1 visa and are going to file tax return, you are resident alien through your phyiscal residence status defined by IRS. So, when you should check your residential alien in your tax form. However, you are nonresident alien by immigration progresss unless you got your greeen card. You wife needs to apply for W-8 form to get ITIN from IRS for Federal Form, but for state ITIN, different state has different requirements. Hopefully, this can help you.
