Is it fine to do FP after the scheduled date?

My FP was scheduled March 20. As I have to leave the state on that day, I went to the local immigration center today. They did not allow me to do FP before the scheduled date but they told me that I can do FP anytime after the scheduled date. I asked them to reschedule a date for me but they let me believe them that it was not necessary. Any one has the same experience? Is it safe to go there for FP after the scheduled date? I am still worrying about the sentence they initially put on the notice: If you fail to appear as scheduled, your application will be considered abandoned.
