somethings unrelated: Does Wang Zhizhin need a chinese passport

Read a lot recently about former NBA player Wang Zhizhi, who got GC already, but with his Chinese passport expired. Is he eligible for applying for US citizenship after 5 years? How come he can stay in US even without a valid passport? Kind of confused!
