If you stay outside of the country longer than a year, your GC will be considerred as abandoned. So you need to file 131 in advance to get a reentry permit for maintaining your GC. Shorter than one year does not need such a reenter permit. However, people are advised not to stay outside of the country more than half a year during any single trip.
