I think you have messed up two concepts, visa and status. 2-year obligation only applies after you have finished the current J1 program (in other words, J1 status if you transfer to a different program in the same field), which is good for a maxium of 5 years. During this period, you need a physical visa stamped in your passport every time when you come back to US after travel abroad. Of course there are a lot factors may impact on the J visa application such as immigration intention, background check etc, but this 2-year obligation doesn't apply at this point when you have an valid on-going DS-2019.
