You may already know that, currently, J1 visa holder can stay in US for 5 years instead of 3 years. Half a year is too short. You may want to renew for a long time so that the visa officer will think that you do need to get back US to continue the work on your previous project.

Some people stay in China waiting for the waiver. Once the waiver is approved, he will change the visa status to H1.
