file number and receipt number are not the same one. file number is the number of your case. probably it is the number on your first letter. It should be specified if it is. The receipt number is for someone who apply something like citizenship and PR card in Canada. It is a special form IMM5401 which could be paid in most of banks in Canada. If you are applying your immigration outside Canada, you won't have this number.
