You should give more detailed information about what you asked.

Based on my experience, you can get your J-1 renewed if you received a new DS-1099. But there is not grantee. You have to tell the visa officer why you still want to go to US after a period of J-1 in the US.

If you are switching from one univ. to another and planning to take the interval to visit China, my suggestion is that you'd better finish your switch first.
