parents of US citizens are not subject to visa quota, so that cuts down on a lot of wait time. But they can still be held up during security check or other procedures. Plus, if they are in China when you filed the immigration petition, they will have to go to US embassy to get their immigrant visa, and waiting for the US embassy to notify them will take time too.
