You are right.

To be safe, go to CIS website and have a through search, I remember someone mentioned such offical explanantion.

The easist way is go ahead using AP, and you don't have to report to the university at all. And I am quite sure CIS will not bother you if you are still stay at the exact same position.

If you want to be really safe, get necessary documents for a H1b visa interview in China. Of course, this way your international office will know. As far as I know to get an H1b visa now is quite easy, just that you have to spend time and money.
