If you are in AOS, and you travel outside of USA, then by law, you has abandoned your AOS.

So to be at the safe side, you need to have an AP in your hands. You can choose not to use it, but you have to have it by law.

No body can guarantee that next time, the officer will not ask for AP when you come back to USA.
