I have the same worry. I had F1-H1-F2 and now agin have H1B and haven't been back to China for 8 years. I am worried for the background/security check. My wife went back with H4 and got the H4 visa easily in Shanghai, because H4 has no background check, I believe. I learned from other immigration forum source that It is better to have H1 visa stamped in original country for the first time. Otherwaise, there might be chance of asking you to go back to your original country for the visa stamping.
I hope more people can share some experiences and thoughts
