If you are on valid OPT, you are F1 status until you leave US for China. And you must get approved AP before you leave US. And your F1 status ends when you exit US and need AP to return as AOS. And after you re-enter US, you need the c9 EAD to continue work because your OPT based EAD is no longer valid.
