Do I have to apply for both EAD and AP ?

Applying for AP now, someone told me it would be better to apply for EAD at the same time. Do I have to? Is it mandatory? When I use AP for reentry into US, do I need to present EAD together with AP to the officer at the border?

I am in H1b now, do not intend to use EAD in recent one year.
