1. If you never use EAD, in case of laying off. Your H1-B will be invalidated, unless you land another job and do a H1-B transfer shortly. Your status will be automatically changed to AOS. You can still stay in the US, and work using EAD (if you have) as long as your 485 is pending.
2. If you use EAD, your H1-B is invalidated and you are on AOS already. You can still stay in the US, and work using EAD (if you have) as long as your 485 is pending.
The only differnce is that if someting bad happens to your 485 when you are on AOS. You are out of status immidately.
