might want to do this just in case or to be safe:

Ask your wife to mail the I94 to you along with other documents such as Bank statement in China (check INS web site about I94 issue), and then you need to mail them to INS office in Kentucky.

My wife did the exactly same thing last summer, and I followed the rules listed on the INS web site. There was no prblem whatsoever when she reentered US.

Ironically, some US custom officers even throw I94 form away after they tear it off from your passport. Why is it a big deal to worry so much?
