I went to Canada for a conference in 2003 when my I-485 was pending. I applied AP. Howerver, when I returned from USA, I showed out my H1 visa but not the AP,they took my I-94 because there was my I-94 number on the H1 recept. It is said if you use AP then your H1 is void and you need EAD for working.
