The following are my understanding. I got my NIW approved for less than one month (petitioned by myself). I think I am knowledged in this topic.

contributions are key factor.

For EB-1 and NIW, objective evidnces (such as recommendation letters, awards, patents and papers) that you have made important contributions especially those to USA are mandatary. I think this account for 70%. Bao1 zhuang1 accounts for 20%, which is also a demonstration of your ability and IQ, for example Bao1 zhuang1 is a very important skill of a professor in writing proposal. Yun4 Qi4 accounts for 10%.

I believe most PhDs qualify for the above standards, and the time needed to get approved may vary.

Finally, hard working and honesty are the only way to win you success on which you can feel really happy, including appying for green card.
