I heard the same story like yours from my friend, so I went to the office (university) who handles my H visa application and extention yesterday, the manager herself is a lawyer, she said I would be able to get H extension after i enter US with AP, and the I-94 which will be stamped with PAROLED, AOS... is OK for H extension.
It is very confusing, different company or university has their own understanding on this issue, at least someone should ask around before they travel internationaly.
