Buy a book called : First Aid for the USMLE step 1. You can learn some basic idea what to follow, how to start. If you don't have an English version of your medical school diploma, you can get it translated at a certified translation service at a charge of about $70.00.
To get into a residency program, at least you have to pass step 1, step 2 CK and step 2 CSA.
Step 3 can be either done before a match or after that, but have to be done within 7 years after your first USMLE exam. Fees for the exams are about: $685 for step 1, $695 for step2CK, $1200 for Step 2 CSA.
I can give you some links that will help you get some ideas:

I followed Kaplan all the way to the end. Didn't study any other books suggested by First Aid. But first aid is extremely useful at the end of your study, shortly before your exam. No matter what books you are gonging to study, do subscribe to Kaplan online Qbank after a couple of readings. After finishing that, you will be a lot more confident.
Wish you good luck.
