You definately can switch eligibility category on a pending AOS.
However, whether USCIS is already doing that in your case, you really need to push by calling and talking to a real person (not voice message).
Same thing as changing address. Some people may have sent the address change form several times but USCIS still send notice to the old address and with no knowledge of your change of address..
